The first real haircut — the one where they sit in the big chair instead of your lap — is a milestone for parents almost as much as it is for kids. Here's how we make it easy at Fanatics, and how you can set your child up to enjoy it.
Before You Come In
Talk about it simply and positively a day or two ahead — "we're going to get your hair cut so it stops getting in your eyes" works better than a long explanation. Avoid words like "hurt" or "scary" even when reassuring them it won't hurt; kids pick up on the word, not the negation. If your child has a favorite show or song, having it ready on a phone or tablet gives them something familiar to focus on in the chair.
What Actually Happens in the Chair
Our barbers start slow with kids — a light comb-through first so the clippers aren't the first thing they feel, then short bursts rather than one long pass, checking in as they go. If your child startles at the clipper sound, we'll pause, let them see and touch the clippers (off), and try again once they're comfortable. There's no rush; a first cut sometimes takes longer than a routine adult cut, and that's expected.
The Booster Seat and the Cape
We use a booster seat across the barber chair for smaller kids so they're at a comfortable working height without feeling like they're "up high," which can be its own source of nerves. The cape snaps at the neck, not tight — if it bothers your child, tell your barber and we'll adjust it or use a smaller towel-drape instead.
If Your Child Won't Sit Still
It happens, and it's not a big deal. Sometimes sitting on a parent's lap in the chair works better for the first visit; sometimes a short break and trying again in five minutes does the trick. Our barbers have done hundreds of first cuts and would rather take an extra few minutes than rush a nervous kid — there's no judgment here, and no extra charge for taking it slow.
What It Costs
A standard kids' haircut is priced the same as our regular haircut service. If a cut is unusually quick or partial because a child couldn't sit for the full service, talk to your barber — we'll work it out fairly. Our guarantee applies here too: if you're not happy with how it turned out, tell us before you leave.
After the Cut
Many parents like to bring their kids back to the same barber every time — familiarity is a big part of what makes future visits easier. If your child clicked with a particular barber during the first cut, ask for them by name next time; Rosie and Mandy both work well with younger clients and are happy to be requested directly.
