Barbershop Glossary

Fade

A haircut where hair blends from longer on top down to bare skin (or near it) on the sides and back, with no visible line. Named by where it starts: low, mid, or high fade.

Taper

A gradual shortening of hair from the top down to the natural hairline at the neck and sides — unlike a fade, a taper does not blend down to skin.

Skin Fade

The sharpest version of a fade, blended all the way down to bare skin for maximum contrast against the hair on top.

Low Fade

A fade that starts just above the ear — the most subtle, professional-friendly fade option.

Mid Fade

A fade that starts around temple height, roughly halfway up the side of the head.

High Fade

A fade that starts high, near the crown, for maximum contrast between the top and sides.

Edge Up / Lineup

Sharpening the hairline, sideburns, and neckline with a straight edge for a crisp, freshly-cut look — often done on its own between full haircuts.

Hot Towel Shave

A traditional straight-razor shave preceded by hot towels to open pores and soften the beard, finished with balm — the classic full barbershop experience.

Straight Razor

A traditional folding blade used for close shaves and sharp hairline/beard edging — requires significant barber skill and control.

Beard Trim

Shaping and shortening a beard to a defined length and outline without fully removing it.

Beard Sculpting / Design

Custom shaping of a beard into a specific style beyond a standard trim, sometimes including designs or hard lines.

Master Barber

In Texas, a barber who has completed advanced licensing requirements beyond the standard Class A barber license, typically reflecting significant years of experience.

Class A Barber License

The standard Texas license (via TDLR) required to legally cut hair, shave, and perform beard services for pay.

Walk-in

A client who arrives without a scheduled appointment and is served in the order they arrive, as chairs become available.

Clipper Cut

A haircut done primarily with electric clippers rather than scissors — typically faster and shorter than a scissor cut.

Scissor Cut

A haircut done primarily with shears rather than clippers, often used for longer styles or more textured finishes.

Crop

A short, textured haircut with a fringe left slightly longer on top — a popular low-maintenance modern style.

Pompadour

A classic style with volume swept up and back at the front, usually paired with a tapered or faded side.

Undercut

A style where the sides and back are cut very short or shaved, with noticeably longer hair left on top.

Hard Part

A shaved line cut directly into the hair to create a crisp, defined part instead of a natural comb part.

Neckline

The hairline at the back of the neck; a clean neckline is one of the clearest signs of a fresh, well-maintained cut.

Grooming Package
